INTERVIEW: Mark Robins reacts to Bristol City defeat

The Sky Blues boss gives his assessment on young side…

10 August 2022

Sky Blues manager Mark Robins says his side can learn from the mistakes that saw them fall to defeat in the Carabao Cup.

With eight changes from the side that faced Sunderland ten days ago, Robins fielded a young side, including debuts for summer signings Callum Doyle and Tayo Adaramola - both aged 18.

Robins highlighted the errors that cost his side versus Bristol City but was quick to acknowledge the learning it would present to his young side.

“We are young, especially on the left-hand side and you can’t make mistakes against any team that’s got any quality because they’re going to punish you and put the ball in the back of the net,” he said.

“The first one, we’ve got to win the header and we don’t win it. The ball gets played across, we don’t jump with and they get a glancing header into the net. It was a really soft goal.

“Josh Eccles gave the ball away and we played inside our own penalty area which isn’t what we want, but they’re youngsters learning the game and that’s what we are and what we’ve got. We’ve got to try and develop those young lads.

“It’s a tough school, difficult learning curve and a learning curve they need to play a part [going forward]. Building blocks in their development that we don’t necessarily need, but it is what it is and we’ve got to get on and play and learn and prepare right for the weekend.

“Those lads have still got a little bit of work to do and the young lads have only just come in, so they’ve got a little way to go, but we can’t expect young players to come in and develop and then batter them, that’s not what happens.

“They’ve had a taster of it and a difficult evening in terms of the score board, but we were better and made some changes in the second half.”

Robins digressed from the result to praise the supporters for turning out in their numbers, to which he anticipates again as the Sky Blues travel to Millwall on Saturday.

“The supporters were brilliant tonight,” he continued.

“I’ve got to thank them for coming, it was a really good atmosphere even though we were nothing like ourselves and I thank them for that and we move on.

“We’ve got Millwall on Friday, a big group of supporters coming so we’ve got to be ready for that.

“We’ve got ninety minutes in people’s legs and in the second half from some individuals, even if the performance was lacking.”
