UNDER-23S: Sky Blues 4-2 Watford

City come from behind to earn all three points...

19 April 2022

The Sky Blues Under-23s came from behind to earn all three points against Watford in Professional Development League action.

The Sky Blues had the first chance of the game when Jonny Ngandu picked out Ryan Howley from a corner, but the midfielders header sailed over the bar.

The visitors then went straight up the other end and from a corner for themselves they opened the scoring when Derek Agyakwa was on the end of the ball into the box to volley home the games first goal.

Watford had the games next opportunity when the ball fell for Kane Crichlow on the edge of the area, but his shot didn’t trouble Tom Billson in the City goal.

City’s best chance to draw level came through Fabio Tavares when the striker was set through on goal from Howley’s ball over the top, but it was the Watford ‘keeper who came out on top with a good save.

City continued to push for an equaliser and they had a chance through Howley from a header once more, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Shaq Ford had the final chance of the half, but his shot from distance was comfortable for Billson and gathered into his arms.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-2 Watford

After the restart, the Sky Blues were straight onto the attack and they found their equaliser when Jodi Jones’ shot from distance was saved into the path of Will Bapaga and he headed home to make it 1-1.

However, Watford came straight out and restored their lead when a ball down the right was cut back for Tiago Cukur and he slotted past Billson.

The Sky Blues set their sights on levelling proceedings once again and they had a chance when Howley beat his man inside of the box and got a shot away from a tight angle, but the ‘keeper got down well to make the save.

City did find a leveller once again and it came from a mix-up at the back between the Watford ‘keeper and centre-back, which enabled Fabio Tavares the chance to find the back of the net and make it 2-2.

Tavares was unlucky to not put City in the lead when he got a shot away from inside of the area, but his shot deflected onto the post and Watford clear.

However, the Sky Blues did eventually take the lead when Ngandu’s corner was met by Abel Alabi and his header came off the bar and then a scramble eventually broke for Alabi again and he found the back of the net ten minutes from time.

City almost put the game to bed late on when from a tight angle Tavares forced the ‘keeper into a good stop.

Then, with seconds left on the clock, the Sky Blues broke and the ball fell at the feet of Will Bapaga and he kept his cool and slotted home to put the game to bed.
