INTERVIEW: Gustavo Hamer Fulham Reaction

Sky Blues midfielder reflects on away victory...

11 April 2022

Sky Blues midfielder Gustavo Hamer spoke to the press following yesterday’s impressive 3-1 victory versus league leaders Fulham.

City returned from Craven Cottage with the three points yesterday afternoon as Michael Rose, Viktor Gyökeres and Callum O’Hare struck to seal the win.

After the contest, Gustavo Hamer highlighted the reason behind the Sky Blues’ triumph.

“We kept going. We tried to keep playing, if we tried to keep the ball and the opponent didn’t then we were winning,” Hamer mentioned.

“We will give everything, I mean today we played the best team in the league and we won, so you can see that anything can happen in the Championship.

“I don’t think many teams can say that they’ve won the double over Fulham; I mean everybody knows that they are the best team in the league. But yeah, we knew what was coming, we knew that Mitrovic had 38 goals and is a danger.

“Our centre-backs did an amazing job with keeping him off the scoreline. I think as a team we were amazing today.”

Having previously prevailed against Fulham earlier in the season with a 4-1 victory at the Coventry Building Society Arena, the 24-year-old spoke of whether that gave the Sky Blues any confidence going into yesterday’s fixture.

“Yeah one-hundred percent, but on the other hand you know that they will come back for you because if you win 4-1 at home against them they will want to win afterwards.

“I think with the power and spirit which we had, we came into the game and were the better team at that point.

“I think the last couple of games you can see that we didn’t score the goals, and today the goal from Viktor, there’s a bit of luck, but it finally happened to us this time.

“I think that shows our character from us that we keep going and Viktor was powerful and strong today, he played wonderfully so I think that he deserved a goal. I think we did well and we have loads of confidence again.”

It was Gustavo’s quick thinking and precise passing to win the ball back and fire across the six yard box for O’Hare to smash into the back of the net, and Hamer reflected on that moment which sealed the victory in added time.

“We knew that they would be coming at us in the second half, it was going to be a different second half than the first half. I think that we dealt well with it, they came back to make it 1-2 of course, so we knew that if they came at us then there would be gaps on the pitch if we won the ball.

“I saw the goalkeeper throw the ball to the centre back without looking out at the pitch, so I pressed in that moment and Cal was free so it was just a tap in.”

And lastly, Hamer gave a mention to the incredible showing of Sky Blues away support once again yesterday.

“They were amazing today; it was sold out again and they never disappoint us. They are always there, it’s amazing.”
