UNDER-23S: Sky Blues 3-0 Salford City

Three second half strikes earn City victory...

9 September 2021

Coventry City u23s won 3-0 this afternoon at the Alan Higgs Centre against Salford City in their second friendly of the week.

Luke Tisdale’s side's first chance came in the eleventh minute when Ricardo Dinanga cut inside from the left and forced the Salford ‘keeper to get down low to stop the shot.

The Sky Blues were dominating the early exchanges and the lively Marcel Hillsner made space for himself before he fired a shot that was tipped over the bar to earn City a corner.

Next to try his luck was Jodi Jones who picked the ball up on the edge of the box before shooting just wide of the post.

Jones then managed to get a shot away, that was well saved, with the rebound falling to Fabio Tavares who put the ball into the back of the net but the flag was raised.

City piled on the pressure and Jones played in Blaine Rowe who fired his shot across goal earning a corner after a strong hand from the 'keeper.

After Hillsner won back possession, Josh Reid ran down the wing and found Dinanga who cut inside and shot but saw his effort fly just over the bar.

On a rare Salford attack, a blocked shot earned the visitors a corner but from the corner kick Hillsner rose and headed away the danger.

City earned a corner for themselves and Hillsner’s pass to Jones set up the midfielder who’s shot was initially fumbled by the Salford ‘keeper before he got it under control.

Cian Tyler was brought into action when the Salford striker had a low shot inside the box but Tyler got down to his right to make the save.

HALF TIME: Sky Blues u23s 0-0 Salford City

Jonny Ngandu was introduced to the contest at the break and he immediately had an effort that went just over with City’s pressure telling.

The Sky Blues efforts were finally rewarded when Dinanga’s shot from the edge of box was blocked but it fell into the path of Tavares who gave City the lead with a tidy finish.

On the hour mark the home side doubled their lead when Jones’ run from the right hand side played in Bright Enobakhare, who fired a powerful shot into the bottom right hand corner leaving the keeper no chance.

Jones then dribbled past two players before he got his shot away but it was saved with City looking for a third.

And with nine minutes remaining, it would come.

Reid went on another run down the left and put his cross on a plate for Harrison Nee, who was on hand to tap in a third.

The energetic Reid then passed to Dinanga who cut inside again with his deflected shot leaving the ‘keeper scrambling back across and he just made it in time to prevent a corner.

Jones then played in Dinanga to put him one on one but the ‘keeper was even to his shot with City winning another corner, which was eventually cleared.

The last action saw Salford go in search of a consolation with Tyler taking the sting out of the shot before Reid cleared off the line as the Sky Blues saw out victory.
