REPORT: Luton Town 5-0 Sky Blues

29 September 2021

The Sky Blues fell to defeat at Kenilworth Road to Luton Town this evening.

Luton were awarded a penalty inside two minutes when Jake Clarke-Salter was adjudged to have fouled Elijah Adebayo inside the box, with the forward finding the back of the net despite Sky Blue ‘keeper Simon Moore guessing the right way.

The home side kept up the early pressure, but City composed themselves with Kyle McFadzean and Todd Kane making vital blocks.

Harry Cornick’s long throw into the box that found the head of Luke Berry, but his effort went wide of the post.

However, Luton would double their lead when Jordan Clark’s ball into the box was headed across goal by Kal Naismith to Cornick with the forward heading past Moore from close range.

The Hatters then scored a third when Cornick beat McFadzean to the ball, with his cut back finding Berry who fired home.

The visitor’s regrouped and Kane’s cross found Viktor Gyökeres at the back post, who laid the ball off for Callum O’Hare to cross with Martyn Waghorn back heel blocked.

Another Kane cross proved troublesome for the Luton backline with Dom Hyam picked out at the far post, but his first-time effort went wide.

But the half ended how it began with Adebayo finding the back of the net after Cornick flicked on James Bree’s cross.

HALF TIME: Luton Town 4-0 Sky Blues

The second half began in end-to-end fashion but neither side could trouble the respective ‘keepers with Gyökeres having two shots blocked.

The Hatters then broke through Cornick whose shot was comfortably gathered by Moore, for his first action ten minutes into the half before Gyökeres went up the other end and forced Simon Sluga into a diving save to deny City a route back into the match.

But Luton made it five when Berry beat Ben Sheaf to the ball with the ball falling kindly to Cornick who found the top right-hand corner.

Bree then fired a shot in, but substitute Cameron Jerome’s attempted overhead kick didn’t trouble Moore.

Fellow Town sub Carlos Mendes Gomes forced Moore into a good save, with the ‘keeper getting down well to his right to deny the winger.

Ian Maatsen did manage to beat Bree on a run down the wing but his cross towards Waghorn was cut out by Tom Lockyer but the game ended with Jerome heading over the bar.
