The Sky Blues U23s host Sheffield Wednesday at the Coventry Building Society Arena this afternoon, with kick off scheduled for 1:00pm. Here’s everything you need to know about our opponents.
Last Time Out...
The U23s continued their winning start to the Professional Development League with a 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the capital last Tuesday.
City took the lead in the 16th minute when skipper Liam Kelly’s quick free kick caught the R’s keeper off guard.
On the half hour the hosts almost equalized but their forward headed wide before Jodi Jones’ volley from a Josh Reid whistled just past the post.
At the start of the second half Reid had an opportunity to double the lead but he couldn’t quite keep his header down.
The hosts went on to hit the bar but the Sky Blues would take advantage of the Hoops’ poor finishing when Kelly got his second of the game, heading home Bright Enobakhare’s cross with twenty minutes to go.
And Luke Tisdale’s side would wrap up the points minutes later when Fabio Tavares was alert to a loose ball to beat the keeper and grab his fourth of the PDL season.
The Opposition
2016/17 PDL Champions Sheffield Wednesday finished eighth, out of nine teams, in the 2020/21 Northern Section of the Professional Development League.
Having picked up their first point of the season after a 1-1 draw at Colchester the Young Owls followed up that result with a defeat to Cardiff City before unluckily going down 2-0 at Charlton Athletic ten days ago.
In a tight first half with few chances the two sides went in goalless at the break however the deadlock was broken in the 62nd minute when Addicks defender Charles Clayden’s cross wasn’t cleared and he fired in the rebound from ten yards out.
Wednesday were caught out again when they were hit on the counter attack by the hosts as Ben Dempsey set up Hady Ghandour to finish from close range to hand Charlton the points.

Last Time We Met
The two sides last met in was in March 2021 when the Sky Blues completed the double over Wednesday with a 3-1 victory in South Yorkshire, following on from February’s 2-1 home win.
Forward Isaiah Brown opened the scoring for the hosts after 11 minutes and the Young Owls went in at the break with the advantage.
However, ten minutes into the second half the Sky Blues got back on level terms when David Bremang found the back of the net.
And just four minutes later City took the lead when Jordan Young fired past the Wednesday keeper before Fabio Tavares found himself on the scoresheet and wrapped up the three points!
