REPORT: Sky Blues 1-1 Derby

A point shared at home...

23 October 2021

The Sky Blues preserved their unbeaten home form in the league with a 1-1 draw against Derby County.

After a quiet opening exchange, Matty Godden’s first-half penalty gave City the advantage at the break.

Derby equalised late on through Graeme Shinnie, as the points were shared at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Ravel Morrison set his sights on goal early on, unleashing a strike from distance, but the effort was denied by Jake Clarke-Salter’s block.

City’s first real chance came when Callum O’Hare slid the ball through to Matty Godden, who was brought down by Lee Buchanan, leaving referee Dean Whitestone no choice but to award the penalty.

On his return to the side, Godden stepped up from six yards and fired down the middle to give City the lead- his third league goal of the season.

A second nearly followed moments later when goal-scorer Godden saw his left-footed attempt tipped around the post by Derby keeper Kelle Roos.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-0 Derby

Fankaty Dabo ventured forward in search of extending City’s lead after the break, but the wing-back’s effort from 25-yards out was saved by Roos.

Derby came inches away to levelling the game when Colin Kazim-Richards’ effort bounced back out off the post.

The Sky Blues had a second, momentarily, when Gustavo Hamer’s 35-yard free-kick crashed off the bar for Godden to head home, but the linesman’s flag ruled the goal out for offside.

After City looking the more likely, it was Derby who grabbed the game’s next goal when Graeme Shinnie volleyed home from just inside the box.

Ian Maatsen nearly snatched a late win for City, but fired over the bar, as the points were shared between the two sides.
