COMMUNITY: Accelerate into Work – David’s Journey with Sky Blues in the Community so far

13 October 2021

The Accelerate programme in Coventry and Warwickshire is a free employment support service funded by the National Lottery Community Fund and European Social Fund, managed locally by the Accelerate CDA to support adults over the age of 19 who are currently out of work and are needing support to find work, improve their confidence, gain new skills or qualifications and becoming work ready.

Sky Blues in the Community are one of many local partners in Coventry and Warwickshire who deliver a Sports Leaders UK Level 1 in Sports Leadership Award for people to join one of the many courses delivered over 12 months.

The course also gives people the ongoing support from the Inclusion Coordinator at Sky Blues and further one to one support from Accelerate in finding work. In addition, the course does not only focus on developing individuals as coaches, but also targets personal growth such as communication, self-belief, lone working, teamwork, self-management and problem solving.

Before taking the course we sit down with participants and complete a PDP (Personal development Plan), this is to get a greater understanding of what the individual needs/wants to improve.

From our last course, one of our participants in the Level 1 Sports Leadership Award, Dave Allcock who was refereed by the Sky Blues in the Community’s MenTalk sessions expressed a keen interest in Sports Coaching and Personal Development. Dave showed great commitment and dedication to improve extraordinary progression, while also providing him with further opportunities to develop as a coach, giving him a specific opportunity to support Sky Blues in the Community’s Disability Football sessions.

We asked Dave what the course has done for him and if he would recommend this for others:

"This course has helped me mentally and physically more than I could have imagined. I have more confidence and self-belief in my coaching abilities and day to day life. I know how to create and deliver a successful session on a variety of sports.

"In addition I'm more fit and active than I've been for a long time. And my overall self-esteem, communication and self-management have improved so much. I now have the confidence to try new things in life and I am not afraid of being incorrect, as I learnt on the session, we all need to fail sometimes in order to progress and succeed in the future.

"I can't recommend the course highly enough; it's helped me be a better person in all aspects of my life".
