Sky Blues secured the services of Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen on a season-long-loan and the defender revealed he ‘can’t wait to get started’.
Maatsen, who spent last season on loan at Charlton Athletic, links up with the Sky Blues ahead of the start of the 2021/22 Championship campaign.
The 19-year-old is looking forward to beginning life with Coventry, starting with Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“I’m happy to be here, and I can’t wait to get started.” Maatsen said.
“I am ready to go and I’m hoping I will enjoy my time at Coventry because it is a big club with a big history, and I can’t wait to play in front of the fans and for them to enjoy being back at the games this season.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the fans on Sunday, obviously last season with the pandemic the fans weren’t allowed in the stadium, so I hope they enjoy it.”
Last season, Maatsen racked up 34 appearances for the Addicks, enjoying his first taste of professional football at 18.
The defender is hoping that experience will help him this season, as he looks to make the step up to the Championship.
“I played a lot of games on loan at Charlton last season and learnt a lot, outside of football as well like being a good person and I have a desire to keep learning, so I am grateful for the opportunity from Coventry to show people what I am about.
“I am hoping to get a lot of experience at a higher level in the Championship and to show myself to English football and make my family proud as I’m still young and still learning so this is all part of my journey.”
The Netherlands Under-18 international also spoke of how the way Coventry play impressed him and he’s hoping it will help to bring the best out of his game.
“Obviously, we hope to play good football, the manager plays a good style of football so I am really excited to start playing for him and show the fans what I can do this season.
“I am a left-back that loves to be on the ball and be dominant, defending wise I’m strong and you will enjoy a lot of me down the left side this season.
“In football anything is possible so let’s see, let’s work together so we can get the best out of the season.”
