REPORT: Sky Blues 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday

City secure a comfortable win at St Andrew's...

27 January 2021

Viktor Gyokeres’ first goal for the Sky Blues and a late strike from Jamie Allen helped City on their way to a 2-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday night.

City found the breakthrough in the second-half when some superb play from Callum O’Hare sent Gyokeres through to apply the finish.

The Sky Blues then sealed the points when substitute Allen found the net with a well-taken first-time effort from O’Hare’s pass in the final minute to secure a comfortable victory.

Mark Robins made two changes from the side beaten by Reading last time out, with Ben Sheaf and Max Biamou returning to the starting line-up in place of Kyle McFadzean and Jordan Shipley.

The visitors forced a fine early save out of Ben Wilson when Matt Penney’s effort from 20-yards out took a big deflection, which Wilson did well to push just past the post.

City created their first real opening of the half when Gus Hamer’s corner from the right was met by the head of Leo Ostigard who saw his powerful effort pushed away by Keiren Westwood.

The Sky Blues came forward again towards the end of the half when Sam McCallum crossed for Biamou at the back post, but the striker couldn’t keep his volleyed attempt down.

HALF-TIME: SKY BLUES 0-0 SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

City were forced into a change at half-time when captain for the night Fankaty Dabo was replaced by Josh Pask after picking up a knock in the first-half.

The Sky Blues took the lead on 56 minutes when Callum O’Hare’s superb turn and swivel saw him take two defenders out of the game before slipping through Gyokeres who slid an effort past former City man Westwood to score his first goal for the club.

The Owls responded with a chance of their own when Barry Bannan’s free-kick from 25-yards out found the top of the net.

City looked to add to their lead when Hamer tried his luck from around 40-yards out, with Westwood getting down low to smother the midfielder’s effort.

The visitors searched for an equaliser when the ball was worked to Josh Windass on the right-hand side of the Sky Blues penalty area, with the forward’s effort deflected into the side netting.

The chances continued to flow when Hamer’s free-kick from the right was nodded towards goal by Hyam and deflected behind for a corner.

From the resulting set-piece, Hamer’s corner almost went straight into the net as the visitors somehow managed to scramble the ball clear before it crossed the line.

Hamer continued to try his luck from range when his free-kick from 25-yards out was comfortably saved by Westwood.

City sealed the win in the final minute when O’Hare selflessly played in substitute Allen who finished through the legs of Westwood to round off a fine second-half performance.
