UNDER 18S: Sky Blues 2-3 Crewe Alexandra

City slip to defeat at the Alan Higgs Centre...

1 February 2021

The young Sky Blues fell to a 3-2 defeat against Crewe Alexandra in their first home game of the New Year.

It was a bright start from City, who dominated the early possession and chances, and their early pressure would be rewarded when in the 12th minute Jay McGrath rose well and headed home from a corner.

Coventry continued to attack well early on and out pass their opponent, however, a lapse in concertation allowed Crewe captain Fenton Green to equalise from a corner.

The Sky Blues had allowed Crewe back into a tie they were out of for the first 25 minutes and the game became more even as the half went on.

The hosts still had the lion share of possession but couldn’t get it done in the final third as they continued to search for the goal to give them the lead.

Hayden Purves cut through the attacking line numerous times but couldn’t finish the moves off, whilst full-back Adam Taylor provided attacking width and crosses which couldn’t be converted.

However, City’s hard-work would finally be repaid when Sam Rodber gave city that lead within the first minute of the second half as he drove at the defence and finished calmly into the back of the net.

The Sky Blues controlled the second half like they did the first, with Alex Costa impressed in midfield controlling the tempo, whilst centre-half pairing of McGrath and George Burroughs kept Crewe quiet.

That was until the 70th minute, where again a goal was scored from a corner. The equaliser really opened up the latter part of the match and both teams became hungry and physical as they search for a winner.

Unfortunately for the Sky Blues, it was the away side who found that winner seven minutes from time.

Substitute Joe Levey finished off a move that came from a City mistake, as an early throw was intercepted, and the ball found its way to Levey, who’s effort from the edge of the area, whistled past keeper Cian Tyler into the far corner.
