City slip to defeat at the Alan Higgs Centre...

8 February 2021

The Sky Blues Under-23s were left frustrated as they slipped to a narrow defeat against Hull City at the Alan Higgs Centre.

It was the Sky Blues who had the first chance of the game after a well battled opening ten minutes to the game.

The chance came to new man Fabio Tavares who recycled the ball following a corner, skipped past his man in the box and got a shot away, but he could only find the side netting.

The visitors created their first opening and it was a fine save from Tom Billson who had to make a fantastic save one v one to deny Will Jarvis opening the scoring.

Seconds later, City almost found the first goal of the game and it was Tavares again who was on the end of a Jobello ball into the box and he had to quick to get a shot away, but he was denied by the Tigers ‘keeper.

The Sky Blues were in control of the game after the opening half hour and they had another chance to break the deadlock and this time it was Jordan Shipley with a well struck effort from 25 yards out, but Harvey Cartwright saved well once more.

It was another shot outside of the box minutes later and this time it was Josh Eccles who went inches away from finding the back of the net.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Hull City

The Sky Blues enjoyed the early possession in the second half, but it was the visitors who had the first chance and it was Ahmed Salam who forced Billson into a smart stop.

Almost a minute later and it was almost a repeat of the previous attack, but this time Salam couldn’t steer his effort on target.

Josh Hinds was the next Hull man to go close but after he had worked his way into the box, he dragged his shot well wide.

The visitors eventually took the lead and it was Jarvis who was on the end of a ball across the box and he had the easy job of tapping into an empty net.

The goal woke the Sky Blues up and they almost had an immediate response through left-back Joe Newton who’s shot cannoned back off of the woodwork.

A superb run by Will Bapaga won City a free-kick in a dangerous position and it was Jordan Shipley who smashed a low drilled effort inches past the post.

It was another free-kick which almost got City level and it was Jordan Shipley again and this time he was even closer as his effort came back off of the post.

The City onslaught continued and this time it was Josh Eccles who burst forward and his ball was left by Shipley for Jobello but the Frenchman’s shot flew over the bar.

Both sides had half chances late on but neither side found the back of the net again and it was the visitors who went away with three points.
