George Burroughs believed the Sky Blues Under-23s put in a ‘brilliant’ showing in yesterday’s victory over Sheffield United.
Luke Tisdale’s side beat second place Blades 2-0 at the Alan Higgs Centre to go eight points clear at the top of the Professional Development League Northern Section.
“The performance was great from the boys, we talked about outworking Sheffield United as in the game earlier this season we probably didn’t do that, so we talked about working as hard as we could, and I thought we did that today.” Said Burroughs.
“Reidy got the first one then I think the second goal was a well worked goal from the boys, a good team goal and Tyler finishing it off.
“I thought we kept the ball well and never gave them any real chances in the game and any chances they did get we blocked, so I thought we were brilliant today.”
This is Burroughs first season at Under-23s level, and he played a starring role as City picked up their second home clean sheet in the win, with the defender speaking of his joy for the shut out as he gets to grip with the league.
“Luke spoke about it earlier that we haven’t had a clean sheet for a while, so we were desperate to get one, I think it’s our first since Colchester earlier on in the season, so it is something we worked hard to get, and we are glad to get it.
“Then to get a few blocks off is obviously alright for me as well!
“It’s obviously difficult (to step up), but I think I have done well, but obviously it helps being top of the league and in a team doing well as well, so I think I’ve done well but I just want to keep going and finish the season strongly as well.”
With the Sky Blues sitting top of the table with no more fixtures till January, Burroughs is looking forward to getting back to league action in 2022 and seeing what the u23s can achieve this term.
“Going into Christmas eight points ahead is something we have worked for hard, and we’ve got to keep going, can’t stop here and we’ve got to finish the season well.
“I’ve not always had that, maybe in u18s we weren’t always near the top of the league, but it is different for me but it is nice to get more of the ball so it’s more enjoyable.
“I just want to play as many games as possible and as well as I can, hopefully train with the first team a few times if I can, but I just need to continue preforming well and see what happens from there.”
