INTERVIEW: Dom Hyam Millwall Reaction

Defender reflects on Millwall defeat...

30 December 2021

Defender Dom Hyam looked back on the Sky Blues’ return to action last night, as City were defeated 1-0 by Millwall.

A late Tom Bradshaw goal saw the visitors leave the Coventry Building Society Arena with the points, and Hyam reflected on his team’s performance.

“It wasn’t ideal; I think we’ve gone about 20 days without a game now, so it was never ideal but it is what it is and we have to try and prepare as best as we can and it just wasn’t our night.

“I don’t think we got into it at all to be honest, I think that it was just one of those games where it wasn’t very pretty but it was always going to be a one-goal game, and unfortunately they got it and we didn’t.

“We need to take one of those chances and then they stretched the game a bit more because we had to try and get an equaliser.

“It was one of those days where it just didn’t fall for us and it fell for them, but we know this league now and we know that at the next opportunity we have got to try and make it right.

“We have to look back at it; we lose the first header and then it’s just a run and a tap in really. We were set, but we needed to do better and look back. That’s what decided the game in the end, and it’s frustrating, but we need to look back and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”

Last night’s fixture also provided Ben Wilson with his first league start of the season, and Hyam took the opportunity to praise the goalkeeper’s efforts.

“He had a good game, didn’t have much to do. He played out fine, came and collected when he needed to, made a good save in the first half, and it was just frustrating for him as well.”

Now that the Sky Blues have reached midway through the league campaign, Hyam also commented on how far his side have shown improvement this season.

“I think you never think about where you are going to be at halfway; we go out to win every game and see where we are at, but it’s a massive improvement on last year.

“We are improving as we go along and it just shows how far we have come as a club. This time three or four years ago we were in League Two and League One. It’s going to take time, but it’s good that we are progressing and we just want to get better and improve.”
