NEWS: Coventry City to pay tribute to George Curtis this Sunday

5 August 2021

Coventry City will be remembering the legendary George Curtis at Sunday’s game against Nottingham Forest.

George sadly passed away last month at the age of 82 and was an icon at the Sky Blues, having played 543 games from 1956 to 1969, captained the Club and been a key part of the club’s off-field staff from 1972 to 1994, including being part of the management team that led City to FA Cup victory in 1987.

There will be a minute’s silence prior to Sunday’s game against Nottingham Forest, which kicks off at 4:30pm and will be live on Sky Sports.

Photos of George will be shown on the scoreboard through the day, while Sunday’s matchday programme is a special edition – with George adorning the front cover and 12 pages dedicated to him.

We are pleased to welcome 15 members of George’s family to the game as guests of the Club.

We will also be joined by players and staff who were at the Club during George’s long spell at Highfield Road, many of whom were close friends of George. Those currently attending are:

John Sillett, Ron Farmer, Bobby Gould, John Poynton, Dave Bennett, Dietmar Bruck, Ian Goodwin, Jeff Blockley, Micky Gynn, Steve Ogrizovic, Andy Blair, Alan Green, Mick Kearns, John Williams, Jamie Hill (son of Jimmy Hill) and Kirk Stephens.

Due to COVID regulations, the former players will not be able to form a guard of honour or be introduced onto the pitch, however they will be watching the game from the West Stand balcony and will be introduced to fans pre-match over the tannoy.

Fans who have passed away since March 2020 will also be remembered on Sunday, with names and photos displayed on the big screen around 15 minutes before kick-off.*

George’s funeral service will take place at Coventry Cathedral on Thursday 12th August at 12 noon, followed by a private cremation.

The service will be live streamed via this link: https://www.facebook.com/cathlivestream/videos

Family flowers only, but donations if desired for Air Ambulance or Dementia UK to A Pargetter & Son Ltd, Funeral Directors, City Mews, Lamb Street, Coventry, CV1 4AE (Tel: 02476223343)

*Please note that the production deadline for his has now passed, and no further names/photos can be submitted.
