INTERVIEW: Martyn Waghorn Wolves Reaction

The striker got off the mark in Sky Blues against Wolves...

2 August 2021

Martyn Waghorn told how it was a special moment for the team to conclude their pre-season schedule in front of the Sky Blue Army at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Waghorn slotted home the Sky Blues’ penalty in yesterday’s clash with Wolves as City wrapped up their pre-season fixtures ahead of Sunday’s Championship opener against Nottingham Forest.

“It was a very good test against a very good side.” Waghorn said.

“For us it was about working on things which we’ve built on in pre-season. A lot of things were good, but there are still things which we need to sharpen up on. Overall, it was a very good test.

“You can see the size of the stadium, the fans, the support, it’s brilliant. I can’t wait to get the season going.”

Waghorn also mentioned how the chance to face such high-calibre opposition yesterday will be of benefit to the team moving forwards.

“Testing ourselves against opposition who are going to keep the ball and make you work allowed us to work on things off the ball, so it was nice to see where we’re at going into next week.

“You work so much together in pre-season, it’s all about getting minutes while everyone knows their jobs and what you’ve got to do if you come on."

Waghorn spent last season at Derby County, coming up against the Sky Blues in both fixtures last year and he spoke of how he was impressed with what he saw and how he is looking to add to that this season.

“One thing that caught my eye when I’ve played against Coventry previously is the energy of the team. In this league you need plenty of it, and hopefully we can cause defenders a few issues this season.

“I take pride in the fact that not only do I want to score goals, I want to help the team too. Hopefully I can contribute plenty of goals and assists this season.

“There’s a real hunger and desire to play in the right way, which is a big thing for me. The way the coaching team wants us to play is exciting. We’ve got bundles of talent and hopefully that will shine this season.”
