REPORT: Brentford 2-0 Sky Blues

City suffer defeat against the Bees...

17 October 2020

The Sky Blues suffered defeat in their return to Championship action against Brentford at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Two goals for Ivan Toney after the break were enough to secure the three points for the Bees.

Marko Marosi was called into action early on, as he had to be alert to make a save to deny Ivan Toney, who got a shot away on the edge of the area.

Brentford enjoyed the opening few minutes of the game and got another shot away through Sergi Canos, but he dragged his effort wide of goal.

A ball deep into the Sky Blues box landed on the head of Emiliano Marcondes, but his header sailed over the bar and on top of the goal netting.

Marosi produced a fine save on 19 minutes as he had to stretch to his right to deny Henrik Dalsgaard, who’s effort from the edge of the area looked troubling.

From the resulting corner, Marko was at it again, this time he had to get down low to deny the Brentford centre-back, Pontus Jansson, who’s shot was well saved.

The Sky Blues first shot on target fell at the feet of Ben Sheaf who forced David Raya into a good save from a tight angle.

City looked to push forward, and they had an opportunity, this time through Michael Rose, who was on the end of Ryan Giles’ ball into the box, but his effort went wide.

HALF-TIME: Brentford 0-0 Sky Blues

Following the re-start, the hosts took the lead through Ivan Toney, as he was on the end of Mbeumo’s ball into the box.

City looked to get back on level terms and they had a chance through Michael Rose once more, however his header was comfortable for Raya.

However, the hosts doubled their advantage and it was that man Toney again who headed past Marosi to make it 2-0.

City almost got one back and it came through Matty Godden after a corner wasn’t cleared by the hosts and the ball came to Godden on the volley, but his shot came back off the bar and bounced on the line.

The striker continued to push and he had another opportunity which fell to him inside of the box, but this time Raya made the save.

At the other end, a corner into the area was met by the head of Ethan Pinnock, but he couldn’t steer his effort on target.

Godden was pushing until the end and did well to lose his man to get on the end of a Ryan Giles ball into the box, but Raya was quick off of his line to make the save.

There was a chance for Ben Sheaf in the first minute of injury time, but he couldn’t beat Raya in the Brentford goal and City left London empty handed.
