INTERVIEW: Sam McCallum Brentford Reaction

The defender reflected on the defeat to the Bees...

18 October 2020

Sam McCallum spoke of his dissapointment following the 2-0 defeat to Brentford yesterday afternoon.

City fell to defeat against the Bees after two Ivan Toney goals after the break secured all three points for Brentford.

McCallum was introduced into the game moments after Toney's second and spoke how he feels the Sky Blues just need time to adjust to their new surroundings.

“It’s a massive step up from League One and there is a huge gap. We have to deal with it throughout the season, by finding our feet and getting some goals.

“It was a changed team. We needed to gel together, we needed time to grow into the game. It wasn’t good enough and the last twenty minutes we sort of woke up a little but the first half and that is not how we normally play.

“Brentford are a good side, they were fighting for promotion last season and almost got there and we had to fight to the end, but we just couldn’t get anything out of the game.”

McCallum came on for just his second appearance of the season since his return to the Sky Blues from Norwich City in the summer window.

Sam came on at right-back in the game, but despite it not being his out and out position, the defender is looking to build on the performance, as he eyes a first league start in the Championship.

“It’s a challenge when you come up against teams like this. I just hope when we come up against more teams like this I can have my chance and keep playing.

“I'm looking forward to my full championship debut, no one would turn that down, so we're looking to the future now. Hopefully I can get more minutes and more starts.
