Sky Blues Under-18s put in a superb attacking performance this past weekend, as they ran riot in a 6-1 win over Queens Park Rangers.
City’s two early goals put them in a strong position for the rest of the game and speaking after the final whistle, Assistant Talent Development Officer, Chay Thompson was delighted with what he saw from City’s youngsters.
“It was a positive performance in every area.” He said.
“The boys played well throughout the game and the two early goals gave us a good start going forward.
“Going into the break we knew we had a healthy lead and therefore it was about maintaining our high standards during the second half.
“The team have had a great start to the season, remaining unbeaten, and the performance gives us a good platform to build on. It is exciting for us as coaches to be able to work with the side to keep on improving each week.”
Although winning is important, Thompson knows the importance of developing the players remains the key aspect for the 18s.
“We must not get carried away, as always there is still plenty to work on. We have a good group and we know the lads are capable of more. For us it is about finding the perfect balance. That balance of winning but also getting the most out of the players and their development.”
A strong team spirit has also been noticeable within the recent results, on this Thompson said:
“We have emphasised the importance of playing for the shirt and playing for the badge.
The players need to know it’s important, it is part of their development to learn what they are playing for, which they have done brilliantly so far this season.”
The Sky Blues have won two and drew one in their first three games this season and will look to continue that from against local rivals Birmingham City this morning.
