Bapaga's brace secures victory for Sky Blues...

2 March 2020

A Will Bapaga brace secured the Sky Blues all three points against Charlton Athletic at the Alan Higgs Centre.

First chance fell to the visitors and it was from a corner which wasn’t cleared by the Sky Blues and the ball came back across goal and was hit Brendan Wirfedy, but Bouwe Bosma made an important block.

Tom Billson was called into action a few moments later as he had to be alert to deny Albie Morgan’s shot from distance.

City looked to grow into the game and found joy through Will Bapaga as he looked to beat his man and get a shot away, but his effort was comfortable for the Addicks ‘keeper.

The visitors went close through Wirfedy again when he was on the end of a header back across goal by Josh Davison, but he could only head over the bar.

Bapaga continued to cause a threat and he looked to open the scoring with a bending effort from distance, but he couldn’t steer his shot on target.

Jordy Hiwula went close for City with ten minutes remaining in the first half, but he’s touch took him away from goal and then from a tight angle his effort went wide.

However, the Sky Blues did take the lead and it was that man causing the problems for the Charlton back four, Will Bapaga who cut inside from the left and drilled the ball into the back of the net, in what would prove to be final play of the first half.

City picked up where they had left off in the first half as they went close through Hiwula to doubling their lead, but the strikers shot was tipped wide.

The visitors went up the other end and called Billson into action as he had to get down well to deny Wirfedy from close range.

The Sky Blues almost doubled their lead with a spectacular effort from Jodi Jones who looked to bend one into the top corner from distance, but his shot went inches past the post.

Bapaga did double City’s lead and it was an outstanding finish by the youngster who went on his own and fired the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.

It should have been three for the Sky Blues when Jodi Jones released Hiwula, who cut in and looked to slide the ball into the bottom corner, but his shot went wide.

Seconds later it was Jones who was looking for goal, but his effort was saved from inside of the box.

At the other end of the pitch, Tom Billson produced a fine stop to deny Wirfedy and the visitors pulling one back.

Hady Ghandour forced the City ‘keeper into a brilliant stop as he had to get down low and tip the ball around the post to help keep the Sky Blues clean sheet intact and all three points.
