City secure all three points at Bristol Rovers...

1 February 2020

The Sky Blues made it ten games unbeaten as they beat Bristol Rovers at the Memorial Stadium in League One.

City had fell behind after former striker Jonson Clarke-Harris opened the scoring, but five minutes before the break, Jamie Allen scored his first City goal and then Liam Walsh put the Sky Blues in front.

Mark Robins’ side would go on to hold out for all three points after controlling the second half.

The first shot on goal of the game came for the hosts and it was former City man, Jonson Clarke-Harris who had a free-kick from distance, but his set-piece was comfortable for Marko Marosi who gathered the ball.

The next opportunity was another set-piece for the hosts but it was a different taker this time as Ed Upson stepped up, but he couldn’t trouble Marko and his effort went over the bar.

Bristol continued to apply pressure in the opening moments of the game and this time it was Alex Rodman at the back post with a header which looked to be heading for goal, but Kyle McFadzean was on the line to clear away.

The Gas eventually took the lead on 24 minutes when Clarke-Harris latched onto a loose ball and from a tight angle, found the bottom corner.

City looked to get back into the game and their first opportunity to do so fell to Michael Rose as he was on the end of a Jamie Allen corner, but Jamal Blackman saved.

The Sky Blues did get back into the game and it was Allen who bagged his first goal for the club as he ran through the Rovers defence after being picked out by Liam Walsh and slotted the ball past Blackman.

Mark Marosi was called into action moments after City had drew level and he produced a fantastic save to stop Clarke-Harris’ free-kick from distance finding the bottom corner.

With three minutes added on at the end of the first half, City took the lead and it was Liam Walsh at Bristol Rovers again who was on the end of a Callum O’Hare cutback and he found the top corner.

HALF-TIME: BRISTOL ROVERS 1-2 SKY BLUES

After the break, the first shot on goal fell to the hosts and it was another free-kick, this time Holmes-Dennis, but his set-piece took a deflection on its way through and it went straight into the hands of Marosi.

The Sky Blues almost doubled their lead through the skipper Liam Kelly as he was on the end of Jamal Blackman dropping the ball, but with his shot looking to be going in, it was headed off the line by Holmes-Dennis.

City had Marosi to thank for the scores staying level on 73 minutes when Clarke-Harris was through on goal and Marosi came rushing off his line to deny the striker.

The Bristol Rovers captain was next to try his luck from distance, but his shot went well over the bar from around 30-yards-out.

That would prove to be the final Gas chance as the Sky Blue secured a 2-1 victory at the Memorial Stadium.
