COMMUNITY: Donate and support SBitC Walking Football!

13 February 2020

Sky Blues in the Community set up Walking football 5 years ago with support from a funding application from the Big Lottery.

On the back of this, Macmillan also helped support the SBitC cancer support Walking Football session directly.

The success of both projects and the impact it has had on the participants lives has been huge. Unfortunately, this funding has now come to an end and therefore we rely heavily on any generous donations to hopefully keep these sessions running for many years to come.

Our Walking Football sessions are available to men and women over 50 years of age.

A slower paced version of the beautiful game, Walking Football gives this generation the opportunity to continue to play the sport they love.

This project also aims to tackle loneliness and isolation as we age, keeping the older generation active and reduces weight-related issues.

We have now expanded to encompass specific sessions for people living with cancer – this offers a support group and a social environment for local patients living with the effects of cancer.

In connection with our Cancer Support Group Walking Football, we encourage PSA (prostate specific antigen) testing in all our attendees to increase early diagnosis. The leading volunteer on our Cancer Support sessions was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer as a result of our regular health testing.

“Walking Football saved my life” – Walking Football Participant who was encouraged to take a PSA test by SBitC coaches and was then diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.

“The Sky Blues Cancer Support Group has really helped guys living with cancer to enjoy life again; sharing laughs, conversation, and cake whilst talking about and playing football. It doesn’t matter how skilled you are – this support group is absolutely for you.” – Prostate Cancer Walking Football Participant

"I can’t express how much of a positive effect the group has had for him. I’ve managed to keep his spirits up, but the group of walking footballers have had an even bigger, positive effect for him. It’s not just something for him to do each fortnight but knowing that the guys have been through the same treatments and they have all helped and supported him and answered questions for him that I couldn’t even start to answer. A huge, huge thanks to the organisers and supporters of this group." Partner to Macmillan Walking Footballer
