INTERVIEW: Ben Sheaf Sheffield Wednesday Reaction

The midfielder reflected on yesterday's defeat...

Ben Sheaf looked back on yesterday’s result, as the Sky Blues fell to a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

City created numerous openings in the game however were caught out when Tom Lees scored the only goal of the game from a free-kick.

Amadou Bakayoko then almost equalised immediately as his header was pushed away by Keiren Westwood following on from a flighted free kick.

Sheaf acknowledged that City may have found themselves walking away with something if only they were more clinical in front of goal.

He said: “I think we deserved better, we created more chances and the better chances in the game. They made it scrappy and tough and we conceded from a set piece which is disappointing but we have to dust ourselves down and go again.

“It is tough on the body but it is what it is, this league is relentless and we have just got to get on with it and we have got to be better.

“It wasn’t great and the pitch was heavy but that is not an excuse but it wasn’t easy. We still managed to get the ball down and play at times and create good chances, we just didn’t finish them off.

“On another day they go in and we win the game, today we concede a poor goal from a set piece and we lose.

“We had the better chances; we know they are strong from set pieces so that is disappointing.”

There is plenty of optimism given the eight matches they remained unbeaten for and now can use the upcoming games to replicate that form again.

The defensive setup is an area the Sky Blues have shown significant improvements and Sheaf believes the team from the attack to the backline all play a key part in that.

He said: “Looking back at the nine games, to be unbeaten in eight and pick up the points we did is very positive, we have to go on another run like that.

“We have definitely become more solid and the confidence was there going into the game, that is why we can’t be too disappointed from today’s result. It starts from the front and the back lads are really important and Ben in the goal, it is a team effort and we have got to keep going.

“I am really enjoying myself; it is a better level than I was playing at last year and I am learning each game I play. I just want to keep playing and improving.”
