ON THIS DAY: The Sky Blues win the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley!

Coventry City beat Oxford this day in 2017...

2 April 2020

Three years ago today, the Sky Blues won the Checkatrade Trophy at Wembley!

On Sunday 2nd April 2017, Coventry City returned to Wembley after a 30 year absence.

Roared on by over 43,000 Sky Blues supporters, goals from Academy graduates Gael Bigirimana and George Thomas secured a 2-1 victory over Oxford United.

The Sky Blues were ahead after 11 minutes when, from a right-wing Jordan Willis cross, Stuart Beavon's attempted volley was blocked invitingly into Bigirimana's path for him to slot home from close range.

Thomas' goal was one to match anything Wembley had seen before, controlling Kyel Reid's left-wing cross with one superb touch before hitting a low, powerful shot with just inside the post from the edge of the box.

Lee Burge came to his City's rescue on three occasions, first tipping over Chris Maguire's free-kick before saving with his legs from Rob Hall either side of Oxford's 75th-minute reply. Burge's superb one-handed stop from former Sky Blue Josh Ruffels led to a last-ditch goalmouth scramble, which City somehow survived.
