City progress to the next round of the Senior Cup...

1 October 2019

The Sky Blues progressed to the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup, with a comfortable victory over Rugby Town.

Three goals in the space of six minutes all but put the game to bed in the first half when Charlie Wakefield, Amadou Bakayoko and Michael Rose were on target.

Rugby pulled one back before half-time, but second half goals from Max Biamou and Zain Wetsbrooke put the game out of sight.

City almost found an opener after just five minutes when Josh Eccles’ corner found Michael Rose at the back post, but his effort was well saved by Matt Hill in the Rugby goal.

Hill was called into action just a minute later, this time it was Gervane Kastaneer who switched the ball onto his right and forced the ‘keeper into a stop from 25 yards out.

Next up was Sam McCallum to try his luck from distance, but his effort didn’t trouble the ‘keeper and sailed over the bar.

Another effort for the Sky Blues and a first for Bakayoko came in the 11th minute, but he couldn’t steer his shot on target and it went over Hill’s goal.

Midway through the first half and Rugby had Fazel Koriya to thank for the scores still being level as he cleared a Max Biamou shot off of the line.

City continued to apply the pressure down the left and it was Tennai Watson who slid the ball through for McCallum and the left-back picked out Bakayoko in the box, but the striker’s shot went over the bar.

The Sky Blues did find the opening goal on the half hour mark and it was Charlie Wakefield who slotted past Matt Hill from inside the box.

It didn’t take long for the lead to be doubled and it was Bakayoko who worked well to block the keeper’s clearance and then fired the ball into the empty net.

The goals kept on coming and this time it was Michael Rose who was on the end of a corner after Max Biamou’s shot was saved superbly by Hill.

City almost had a fourth through Gervane Kastaneer as he was picked out by Westbrooke inside of the box, but he was denied by a superb save from Hill.

Rugby pulled one back just before half-time when Dylan Parker found himself through on goal and slotted the ball past Ben Wilson

The Sky Blues looked to restore their three-goal lead and it was another corner which troubled the Rugby defence as Rose’s shot was cleared off the line and then on the follow-up his effort was saved by Hill.

HALF-TIME: Rugby Town 1-3 Sky Blues

After the break City picked up where they left off and were unlucky to not find the back of the net through Max Biamou, but his shot was saved.

Biamou was denied by Hill again just seconds later, when he won the ball back and forced a shot away from outside of the box.

Rugby were forced to soak up the City pressure as the shots continued to rain in, this time Kastaneer again from outside of the box, but he couldn’t find the target.

Substitute Jack Burroughs looked to try and get involved in the action early on and he created a chance for himself, but he couldn’t steer his shot on target.

The Sky Blues did eventually add a fourth and it was Max Biamou who was finally rewarded for his efforts after he wriggled away from the centre-back to find the bottom corner.

The lead was extended to four when Will Bapaga was brought down in the box and midfielder Zain Westbrooke stepped up and converted the penalty.
