City slip to first defeat of the season...

10 October 2019

The Sky Blues Under-23s slipped to their first defeat of the season against Millwall at The Den.

Four first half goals for the hosts were enough to see them out of sight, despite David Bremang scoring from the spot midway through the second half.

The first opportunity of the game fell to the hosts and it was left-back Junior Tensia who had an effort from distance, but it was comfortable for Cian Tyler.

City looked to create their first chance and went close when some good play by Blaine Rowe down the right saw the right-back put in a teasing ball across the face of goal, but it no one could get on the end of it.

Millwall missed a glaring chance moments later when a ball into the box from Tyler Burrey picked out George Alexander, but his effort went over the bar.

The Sky Blues almost found the opener minutes after when Jordan Young’s corner was met by Morgan Williams, but he headed wide.

Young was involved again when he tried his luck from range, but it was well saved by veteran ‘keeper Luke Steele in the Millwall goal.

However, the hosts took the lead through fortunate circumstances when Rueben Duncan’s shot was steered into the path of Alexander who prodded home from a yard out.

City looked to make an immediate response and it was under-18 Thai Duggan with a shot from range, but Steele made the save.

The ‘keeper would’ve been helpless to stop David Bremang’s shot from range next up as it whistled past the post, with Steele thankful to see it go wide.

Millwall doubled their lead ten minutes later when a short corner played to Jayden Davis who went past Joe Nightingale and he found the back of the net from a tight angle.

The lead was extended to three four minutes after the second when Tensia’s ball into the box picked out Alexander and he headed past Tyler.

Things went from bad to worse when the hosts added a fourth just before half-time as Sam Skeffinton’s shot from distance beat Tyler.

HALF-TIME: Millwall 4-0 Sky Blues

After the break City looked to reduce the deficit and had an opportunity when Bremang beat three to earn a free-kick, but the set-piece went straight into the wall.

Duggan went close to pulling one back after his header was well saved by Steele after a good ball into the box from Joe Newton.

The Sky Blues did pull one back however, after David Bremang was adjudged to have been brought down in the box, he stepped up to take the spot kick and sent the ‘keeper the wrong way.

City continued to have a foot hold of the second half and went close to a second when Jordan Young’s shot from distance was saved.

Despite City continuing to press they were unable to add to their tally and slipped to a first defeat of the season.
