INTERVIEW: Zain Westbrooke Colchester Preview

The midfielder previews the FA Cup clash...

8 November 2019

Midfielder, Zain Westbrooke is looking forward to the Emirates FA Cup getting underway this weekend when City travel to Colchester United.

Westbrooke has featured once before in the competition a few years ago for Leyton Orient in a defeat that day and is now looking for his first win.

Colchester are the opponents this weekend, a side who have done well in domestic competitions this season, and Zain is hoping for a win to get through to the Second Round.

He said: “It’s something different, it’s something to excite you and for us importantly it’s another must win game.

“I think its nice everyone because you want to play in the FA Cup, you grow up as a kid watching it and get excited for it so its nice to play in it.

“Colchester are doing well in the league and in the other cup they’ve been very successful so far and I’m sure they’ll be looking to carry that on and keep their momentum going and for us it’s a chance to start a good cup run for ourselves.

“I think we’re happy with how things have gone so far, and we know we could’ve done better in certain games and in certain aspects of our play, but this is a good game for us to improve and try some different things.

“Colchester will see it as a chance to be the underdog and get another win and we have to be professional and do the job and get through to the next round.”

The midfielder has enjoyed a good run in the side this season, playing more games than he has done in his career to date.

Westbrooke has been a key player in the middle of the park and despite a spell outside of the team, he came back and has regained his place in the side.

“I had a good start to the season and then dropped out for a few games, but I think it will be like that all season I feel with the competition here.

“Everyone wants to keep the shirt as long as possible and play as many games and that’s what I’m trying to do.

“You have to look at yourself and see what you can do and see what the team doesn’t have and what you can bring and then show that on the training pitch and get picked for the game on the Saturday.”

Westbrooke scored his first goal for the Sky Blues in the opening game of the season in the 1-0 win over St Andrew’s.

Since then, Zain has chipped in with another two goals, one from a free-kick and one from the penalty spot and he told how he believes everyone in the side should be chipping in with goals this season.

“I think everyone needs to take a bit of responsibility when it comes to scoring goals, we can’t just leave it to the strikers to score and the defenders to defend.

“We all have to chip in and take responsibility and scoring is a big thing in football and if I can do that to help the team then ill be glad to do my part.

“In a few games we haven’t quite hit the mark but we’re always going to create chances we know that, so when they start going in I think they’ll come like they did at the start of the season with goals coming from everywhere.”
