REPORT: Doncaster Rovers 2-0 Sky Blues

City fall to defeat at the Keepmoat...

4 May 2019

The Sky Blues were beaten 2-0 by Doncaster Rovers at Keepmoat Stadium in their final Sky Bet League One game of the season.

Kieran Sadlier headed Rovers ahead midway through the first-half and John Marquis added a second in the final minutes of play.

The first opening of the game fell Doncaster’s way, as Mallik Wilks rasped a left-footed shot over the crossbar after breaking away from Brandon Mason.

At the other end, City’s left-back had an opportunity of his own but his left-footed shot was blocked well by Rovers and the resulting corner saw Jordan Shipley volley wide.

On 25 minutes Herbie Kane had a chance pulled back to him on the edge of the area, however much like Wilks’ earlier attempt he found his shot glide high over Lee Burge’s goal.

Moments later Rovers wasted another chance when Marquis mistimed his first shot and forced a smart save out of Burge with his second, after he’d brought the ball down fantastically from an over the top through ball.

But, Doncaster’s relentlessness did reap its reward and Sadlier headed the hosts in front after 31 minutes, following some strong wing play by Wilks.

Marquis had another shot before the half-time whistle, this half volley flew past Burge’s post.

Unfortunately for the Sky Blues the first-half finished with an injury to the ‘Bright’ Enobakhare, Conor Chaplin replaced the on-loan Wolves attacker.

HALF-TIME

Jordy Hiwula started the second-half sharply and kept Marko Marosi on his toes when he blasted one towards Rovers’ near post.

Soon after, Liam Kelly and Chaplin also struck from range but both were unable to find the target.

With the game petering out, Marquis added to Doncaster’s lead and stroked the ball into the back of the net after a goalkeeping mix-up.

Jordan Ponticelli had a chance to bring one back in added time, but it wasn't to be for the Sky Blues.
