COMMUNITY: SBitC continue female beginners running courses in Coventry

31 May 2019

In It Together, a project run by Sky Blues in the Community, the official charity arm of Coventry City Football Club, is calling on Coventry ladies to lace up their trainers and start running this summer by joining one of its inclusive beginners running courses.

Following the popular ‘Couch to 5k’ programme championed by radio DJ Jo Whiley, sessions are designed to support complete beginners or those looking to return to running to gradually build up their running from 90 seconds to 30 minutes in eight weeks. Whether joining to regain fitness after having a baby, to keep active in older age or to try a new challenge, the course is suitable for women of all ages and abilities.

The courses, now in their third year, has successfully supported over 1,500 local women to start running, many of whom have gone on to complete ParkRun, 10ks, and half and full marathons.

Sessions are led by trained Sky Blues in the Community coaches and volunteer run leaders, many of whom have completed the course themselves, and take place in three locations across Coventry and Warwickshire; Memorial Park, Coventry (Mondays), Riversley Park, Nuneaton (Tuesdays) and Longford Park, Coventry (Thursdays).

Victoria, took part in the course in April 2018 and now volunteers as a run leader; “I had always wanted to try running but never had the confidence to go on my own.” Victoria explained. “When I arrived on week one I was terrified but as soon as it started I felt so supported, like being surrounded by friends. I still remember how it felt to challenge myself each week so I really understand what the ladies are going through and know how to help them.”

Claire took part in the course, graduating this spring. “On week one I could barely run for 90 seconds and never for a minute thought I would get to 30 minutes but each week gradually got longer and before I knew it I could run for the full 30 minutes - I was so chuffed! Now I go running when I need a bit of ‘me time’ in my busy life.”

The next beginners courses start the first week in June and are now open to sign up, for more information search ‘In It Together’ on Facebook or contact the Health Manager at Sky Blues in the Community on Nathan.isom@ccfc.co.uk.
