REPORT: Barnsley 2-2 Sky Blues

City and Barnsley share the points at Oakwell...

30 March 2019

The Sky Blues held Barnsley to a 2-2 draw in an end-to-end affair at Oakwell.

Barnsley’s Alex Mowatt opened the scoring in the 9th minute, but Jordy Hiwula equalised with a fine half-volley before half-time.

Cauley Woodrow hit the Reds back into the lead early in the second-half, however City equalised once again, this time courtesy of Luke Thomas.

Cameron McGeehan and Cauley Woodrow had long range efforts during Barnsley's early superiority, neither caused much concern to Lee Burge’s goal.

Minutes later, Mowatt tapped home from ten yards to put the Tykes in front.

After 30 minutes of play the Sky Blues managed to establish a foothold in what had been a Barnsley dominated affair, when Luke Thomas’ determination in winning the ball back led to Brandon Mason crossing to Jordy Hiwula, who took one touch on his chest and a second on his left foot which smashed into the back of the net, giving Adam Davies no chance to react.

Thomas was at it again just before the interval as he dribbled his way into the Barnsley penalty area, however before he could find Amadou Bakayoko, his cross was scrambled away desperately by Liam Lindsay.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1 - 1 Barnsley

The Tykes came out in the second-half much like the first, and after some quality interchanges, Cauley Woodrow slotted home from seven yards.

Thomas continued to enjoy himself down the right wing, and with every opportunity looked to take on Ben Williams when City countered.

One of these surges came to fruition as the Sky Blues equalised for the second time in the game. The 20-year-old worked some space onto his favoured left foot and curled the ball around Davies with great aplomb.

It was end-to-end football as both teams chased a winner, Williams arrowed a shot at Burge who palmed away, and on the counter Hiwula beat his man but was unable to squeeze the ball past Davies.

City’s energy looked to be reaping the rewards and Bakayoko came so close after a disastrous back pass from Lindsay, the forward latched onto the loose ball however couldn’t sort his feet out to get a shot away.

With every attack the Sky Blues looked destined to find a winner, it was Dom Hyam this time who looked to capitalise but the Tykes remained resolute and prevented his header from finding the goal.
