NEWS: SBitC visit Parliament to receive the Midlands Community Club of the Year Award 2019

6 March 2019

On Monday 4th March, Sky Blues in the Community and Coventry City FC were invited to the Houses of Parliament to receive the EFL Checkertrade Community Club of the Year Award for the Midlands.

It was a day of recognition and celebration for the six regional winners from the EFL's 72 Clubs.

We were selected for our innovative and ground-breaking work across inclusion, community engagement, education and health. We were honored at the House of Commons, receiving our award from EFL Interim Chair Debbie Jevans and EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey.

The EFL received strong submissions from a wide range of clubs with the panel marking the applications on social impact and a showcase project.

Our 2018 showcase project, Turn2Us, is a school holiday programme that offers families with children, who receive free school meals during term times, the chance to maintain a healthy diet throughout the year.

Operating in an area of high deprivation, the community team welcome children several days a week, providing meals, activities and workshops for their families.

EFL Chief Executive, Shaun Harvey said: "You can't underestimate the work that these clubs are doing and what difference they're making in the community. This event has given us the opportunity to highlight the work of the top Clubs in each region. Football is a vechicle to open many, many doors and actually at local level it opens even more."

David Busst, Head of Community at SBitC said: "On receiving news of our award I was honoured, overwhelmed and humbled that we had been chosen as regional winners for the Community Club of the Year , I am so proud of all the SBITC staff and volunteers whose continued hard work and passion to making a difference in the Community we serve has been recognised. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our funders, partners and Coventry City FC as without their continued support we would not be able to impact as much as we do locally."

Sky Blues in the Community are honoured to be able to represent the Coventry City FC badge. We are dedicated to changing lives within our local community and without the ongoing support of CCFC it would not be possible.
