The Sky Blues Under-23s slipped to defeat against Rugby Town at Butlin Road in their latest pre-season fixture.
Two goal either side of half-time by Charlie Evans gave the hosts a 2-0 win.
The first chance of the game fell to the hosts as Fitzgerald latched onto a loose ball but he dragged his shot wide of the post.
City took a hold of the game in the opening stages and almost found an opener through Max Bimou, but his close-range shot was well held by Matt Hill.
A minute later and it was Jack Burroughs who looked to try his luck from distance, but his shot went over the bar.
Biamou continued to be involved going forward for the Sky Blues and after running onto a through ball by William Bapaga, he couldn’t quite connect how he would’ve liked with the ball and his shot was saved.
Rugby created an opening a few moments later and it was Charlie Evans who had a sight of goal from outside the box, but his shot went over the bar.
The Sky Blues almost took the lead with 24 minutes on the clock and it was Declan Drysdale was on the end of a Westbrooke ball into the box, but he heads wide.
‘Keeper Tom Billson was called into action when ball across the box was met by Marsden and he watched as Billson pulled off a superb save to stop a certain goal.
However, the hosts would take the lead just before half-time and it was Evans who slotted past Billson from inside the box.
After the break, City almost found a leveller when Bapaga shifted the ball onto his left and unleashed an effort from the edge of the box, but his effort went over.
On 52 minutes, Rugby doubled their lead and it was Evans again who was on the end of a ball into the box, which at first glance looked offside, but the linesman didn’t flag and the goal was awarded.
After a double change, which saw Ngandu enter the game, the midfielder made an immediate impact with a defence splitting pass which was met by Burroughs, but his shot was saved.
Another chance followed and it was Trialist with a shot from outside of the box, but it was straight at Hill.
City continued to apply pressure on the Rugby back five and it was Ngandu with a half-volley from 20-yards out, but his shot went wide.
