A young Sky Blues XI came away with 1-1 draw at AFC Telford in their recent pre-season fixture this past weekend.
Midfielder, Josh Eccles turned in a professional performance at centre back against an experienced, senior side and was keen to take the positives from the game.
He said: “We had quite a young team, a couple of new faces and a few players playing out of position, so it was tough, but I think we did really well to get a 1-1 draw.”
Josh sees himself as a centre midfielder but has played at the back earlier in his career and it is a position, he doesn’t feel uncomfortable in.
Eccles said: “It’s been a while since I have played there and it took ten minutes to get used to what to do but I quite enjoyed it to be fair, it gives you the opportunity to see the whole picture and improve your communication skills.
“We were low on numbers and it wasn’t something we had worked on in training, so we did well with a few of us out of position”
Eccles managed one senior appearance for the Sky Blues last season, but was recently part of the squad who travelled to Spain for the pre-season tour.
Speaking about the experience he said: “A couple of days before a few players could have gone so I wasn’t quite sure I was definitely going, but when I found out I went straight home to tell my mum and step-dad how excited I was.
“I enjoyed it, a couple of lads my age went, and it was a good pre-season tour.
“It was really hot too and I am not the best in the heat so there was plenty of sun cream.”
Eccles is hoping his performances in pre-season can help him to break into the first team for the upcoming season.
He said: “I’ve got to keep improving and wait for my chance.
“I want to be in and around the first team as much as possible, get as many games and if not, getting on the bench, coming on and making an impact.”
