INTERVIEW: "Fingers crossed we can get a couple or three" - Mark Robins discusses transfers

7 July 2019

Manager Mark Robins has said that there could be two or three further new additions to the Coventry City squad.

10 players have already joined the Sky Blues ahead of the new season, and Robins expects further business both in and out at the Club.

“There’s bits to go out, bits to come in," said Robins.

"Fingers crossed we can get a couple or three – depending. Then there will be some going out on loan and some will go out permanently in the next couple of weeks, we’ve just got to see how it goes.  But it will be busy from now until the start of the season, or until the end of August really."

Asked if there was the possibility of loan players coming in, Robins did not rule out that prospect.

"There is the possibility of loans. Everything is open to me at the moment.

"I’ve just got to look and see where we need a little bit of strengthening and a bit of help or if we’re OK, but I’m looking for more bodies anyway to give us a boost in terms of different areas of the pitch where we might be able to play different formations."

The local media asked Robins about Junior Brown, the left back having featured for the Under 23s in Saturday's win over Conquest Academy while Brandon Mason and Sam McCallum featured in that position versus Leamington.

"Junior will be available to go out – that is only fair," the Manager said.

"He’s found it possibly more difficult to get into the team than before. Obviously I’ve got an eye to Sam McCallum and his development as well. Brandon had the shirt for the second half of last season, and started with it. I really can’t carry the three. It’s one of those things that happens at times, and I’m sure there won’t be any shortage of takers.

"He is a good lad, he has done everything that has been asked of him and it is difficult. It’s one of those things, it is circumstances. The way we are and what I want to do is give youngsters an opportunity, and if the pathway stop then that doesn’t happen. I can’t block it for them, if they are good enough."

During Friday's Kit Launch, Robins told fans that a number of players would be leaving the Club and the Manager expanded on that following Saturday's game against Leamington.

"Whether it's 10 or a few less, there’s going to be players that need games. None of those are really from my side of the squad, they are more the Under 23s and players that have got to move on for the sake of their careers."

There has been media speculation regarding interest in striker Conor Chaplin, and the Sky Blues Manager responded to those reports.

"There's nothing happening at the minute," Robins said.

"There is interest. There’s always interest in good players. We’ll just wait and see how that one unfolds.

"I’m looking to do something on the ‘ins’ side, before I look at anything on the ‘outs’."
