City pick up first Sky Bet League One win away...

29 December 2019

The Sky Blues picked up their first Sky Bet League One away win on Sunday as a Matty Godden hattrick sunk league leaders Wycombe Wanderers.

Godden’s treble and a Sam McCallum wonder strike was enough to secure all three points sending City into the play off places.

The Sky Blues flew out of the blocks and were ahead three minutes in as the ball was played out to the left to McCallum, who cut inside onto his right foot and curled a glorious effort into the top corner.

Liam Kelly then tried his luck from range as he received a ball on the edge of the box, turned sharply, but wouldn’t get enough power on his shot to trouble Ryan Allsop who held onto the ball.

Wycombe replied 14 minutes in as Adebayo Akinfenwa beat the offside trap and latched onto a ball from Sido Jombati over the defence before sliding the ball past Marko Marosi.

McCallum found himself in the final third again and went clear through on goal however he was bought down by Jombati which resulted in a spot kick for City.

Matt Godden stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past the ‘keeper to put the Sky Blues back in front just two minutes after Akinfenwa’s goal.

Jordan Shipley then found himself one on one with Allsop and took the ball around the advancing ‘keeper but created a tight angle for the shot which was eventually cleared by the Wycombe defence after a scramble in the box.

Godden doubled his tally for the afternoon on the stroke of half time, as Shipley cleverly flicked the ball through the defender’s legs into the path of the forward who rounded the ‘keeper and slotted the ball into the empty net.

Wycombe still had time to work Marosi before half time as a clever effort from Scott Kashket forced Marosi into a smart save as he palmed a fierce effort away from danger.

HALF TIME: WYCOMBE 1-3 SKY BLUES

City started the second half as they left off as five minutes in Godden grabbed his hat trick thanks to a sweetly struck half volley from the edge of the box.

A long forward pass found Shipley who cleverly set the ball backwards into the path of Godden who made not mistake with the shot, before celebrating in front of the 1800 travelling Sky Blue army.

Zain Westbrooke then tried to get in on the act however he got to much on his long-range effort and sent it over the bar.

Second half substitute Amadou Bakayoko nearly made it five as Shipley broke down the left and fired a low cross along the six-yard box but Bakayoko couldn’t stretch enough to bundle the ball home ten minutes from time.

Michael Rose was found at the back post from a Liam Wlash freekick minutes from the end but failed to get clear contact on his header and it bounced wide.
