The Sky Blues booked their passage into the Emirates FA Cup third round after an impressive away performance at Ipswich Town, ending the nine-day trilogy between the two sides with a win.
City ran out 2-1 winners at a rain swept Portman Road thanks to goals from Jordan Shipley and Max Biamou in the first half.
Marko Marosi was called into action almost immediately as a long ball over the defence was met by frontman Kayden Jackson who looked to place the ball into the bottom corner, but Marosi was equal to it and palmed the ball away to safety.
Seven minutes in Max Biamou came close for the Sky Blues as the ball broke to his feet in the area and his shot looked destined for the net before Toto Nsiala threw his body in front of the shot to divert the ball behind for a corner.
Biamou was then involved again as he played a one two with Callum O’Hare to tee up Jordan Shipley on the edge of the box but his effort went well wide of the post.
The Sky Blues took the lead 18 minutes in as Biamou held the ball up well on the edge of the box, out muscled his defender, and flicked the ball through to Shipley who calmly slotted the ball past Ipswich ‘keeper Tomas Holy.
O’Hare nearly double City’s lead as a great passage of play between Liam Kelly and Jamie Allen released Shipley down the left who clipped a cross to the far post which was met by O’Hare but his header was smartly saved by Holy.
Biamou did then make it two 12 minutes from half time, as another excellent passage of play through the midfield set Jamie Allen free to send the ball out wide to Shipley, and scorer turned provider as he slid the ball across the face of goal for Biamou who side footed the ball onto the net.
HALF TIME: IPSWICH 0-2 SKY BLUES
After a quiet opening fifteen minutes, the Sky Blues produced a swift counter attack as an excellent diagonal ball from Biamou found Shipley on the left who delivered a wicked cross towards the front post but it was well held by Holy.
Biamou then had a glorious chance to make it three as Jamie Allen drove down the left-hand side, dribbled past his man and sent over an excellent cross to Biamou who found himself unmarked 12 yards out, however his first-time volley flew over the bar.
Ipswich pulled one back six minutes from the end as substitute Luke Garbutt climbed highest at the back post and his header squirmed over the line to set up a nervous end to a previously comfortable game.
City held on in the five minutes of injury time to confirm their place in the third round and will travel to either Plymouth Argyle or Bristol Rovers, but will have to wait until Tuesday to discover their next opponents as the two sides face a replay of their own.
