REPORT: Sky Blues 2-0 Bristol Rovers

City continue unbeaten league start...

17 August 2019

Goals in either half from Jordan Shipley and Gervane Kastaneer secured three points for the Sky Blues against Bristol Rovers.

Shipley opened the scoring in first-half injury time when he fired a low effort into the bottom left corner.

Substitute Kastaneer sealed the points with eight minutes left to play when he lashed a magnificent effort in off the post with his first touch of the match.

The visitors created the first real chance of the match when Ollie Clarke was sent through, but the Bristol Rovers captain could only blaze his effort wildly into the stands.

City almost broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when Shipley played a neat ball in-field to Brandon Mason, who in-turn picked out Matt Godden, whose superb effort from the edge of the penalty area struck the base of the post.

Jordi Hiwula then jinked his way past his marker and into the penalty area, down the left-hand side, only for his attempted cutback to ricochet back off the goalkeeper and away to safety.

Rovers responded when Liam Sercombe delivered a free kick into the box which was headed over the bar at the back post by Tom Davies.

The Sky Blues continued to threaten when Zain Westbrooke’s cross into the box, just past the half hour mark, was flicked over the bar by Hiwula.

The ball then looped kindly into the path of Godden at the back post but the striker saw his well-struck effort blocked by Luke Leahy.

Just before half-time Shipley sent Wesley Jobello away down the right-hand side but the winger’s ball across the box was flicked wide by Hiwula.

Moments later Shipley and Jobello combined again to open the scoring with the Frenchman’s cross finding the midfielder in plenty of space to fire an effort into the bottom left corner to hand City the lead at half-time.

The Sky Blues picked up where they left off in the opening exchanges of the second half when Hiwula’s low effort was well saved by Anssi Jaakkola.

After another quiet period of play Shipley spun neatly around 20 yards from goal before shooting over the bar on 67 minutes.

The visitors thought they had scored an equaliser with 20 minutes left to play, after bundling the ball home, only for the referee to blow for a foul in the penalty area.

Fankaty Dabo then picked out Godden with an excellent cross from the right but his effort was well held by Jaakkola.

Manager Mark Robins opted to bring on Kastaneer for the final 10 minutes and his decision was justified almost immediately.

The substitute controlled an aerial pass from Westbrooke, after some fine play from Dabo, before crashing an effort into the goal from the right-hand side of the penalty area.

The victory means City remain unbeaten in League One, after three games, ahead of a trip to Portsmouth on Tuesday night.
