REPORT: Sky Blues U23s 4-3 Crewe Alexandra U23s

28 August 2019

Coventry City Under 23s were 4-3 winners over Crewe Alexandra on Wednesday afternoon at the Alan Higgs Centre.

The Under 23s picked up another 3 points to continue an unbeaten start to the 2019/20 Professional Development League season.

Charlie Wakefield, David Bremang, Max Biamou and Jack Burroughs were all on the scoresheet in an end-to-end game.

The Sky Blues started strongly, with both Wakefield and defender Declan Drysdale hitting efforts just wide in the first 15 minutes. However, Crewe grew into the game, beginning to get more possesion and territoty as the first half reached the midway point.

They forced Billson in the Sky Blues goal into his first meaningful save on 25 minutes. Crewe broke down the right hand side and whipped in a dangerous cross, which turned into an effort on goal thanks to the wind at the Alan Higgs Centre, forcing the Keeper to turn the ball around the post smartly for a corner.

However the deadlock was broken on 38 minutes, when Crewe took the lead. The visitors broke quickly down the right hand side and pulled the ball back to striker Lewis Reilly who slotted the ball away.

City hit back quickly, with Charlie Wakefield restoring parity. A smart through ball from the Sky Blues released Wakefield one-on-one 18 yards out, and calmly poked the ball to the Keepers right.

The scores were level at the break, but David Bremang put the Sky Blues in front just after half-time. Will Bapaga drove into the box on the right hand side, and cut the ball back across the Crewe six yard box for Bremang to score.

The lively Wakefield looked to extend the lead on 57 minutes but his jinking run through the Crewe defence was smothered by the on-rushing Crewe keeper, while Biamou also had a good close range opportunity after a dangerous cross by Blaine Rowe.

Crewe were not to be deterred and levelled matters to 2-2 in the 72nd minute through substitute Joe Robbins' low finish.

That score only lasted four minutes, when Max Biamou made it 3 in 3 for the Under 23s this season as he continues his comeback from injury. Jordan Young, a second-half sub for the Sky Blues, moved into the penalty area on the left and played a low pass for Biamou, who finished emphatically from 12 yards out.

City's Under 23s extended their lead after 87 minutes. Jack Burroughs, showing his versatility by playing at left-back, got the ball around 30 yards out from the Crewe goal. He hit a superb right footed shot with power and curl that left the Crewe keeper with no chance.

The scoring wasn't over, as Crewe's Sass-Davies met a corner with his head to make it 4-3, leading to a nervy finish to the game. However, the Sky Blues saw the victory out to make sure the unbeaten start to the season continued.
