INTERVIEW: Dom Hyam Reflects On Bristol Rovers

The defender scored his first goal for the Sky Blues...

23 September 2018

Dom Hyam bagged his first goal for the Sky Blues as he gave City hopes of fighting their way back into the game at Bristol Rovers.

City began the game on the front foot, but after seeing numerous early chances go begging, quickly found themselves three goals down with a mountain to climb for the rest of the afternoon.

Hyam spoke after the match about the way that the afternoon unfolded: "It's about taking our chances when we had them, it would have been a completely different game if we had taken the chances we had in the first few minutes.

"We gave ourselves a lot to do in that first half - it wasn't to be."

Despite falling victim to an impressive 15-minute spell in the first half from the home side, the defender is looking at yesterday's performance as a chance to improve for next Saturday's fixture at home against Sunderland: "We have just got to look ahead to Sunderland now and put things right then.

"They're [Bristol Rovers' goals] were all stoppable. We will take our medicine, we will look back on that and hopefully put that right."

The 22-year old also alluded to other ways in which the defence are always looking to improve on the football pitch: "We can always talk more.

"We always communicate and it has normally been quite good throughout the season, but possibly today it hasn't been how it should have been.

"But that's something else we can improve upon and put right next week against Sunderland."

Set-pieces have been effective for the Sky Blues of late, and that trend did not falter at the Memorial Stadium as Hyam rose highest from Doyle's floated freekick to head home on the stroke of half-time, and this is a tactic that City are all too aware of: "We look to score from anywhere on the pitch and set-pieces are a big part of our game.

"We have been working really hard on them so hopefully we get another one next week, and we just have to try and take our chances more than we did today."

With the season well underway and Sky Bet League One fixtures coming thick and fast, Hyam is looking ahead to next weekend in order to put things right as quickly as possible: "The games come thick and fast in this league as everyone knows and we have just got to take every game as it comes.

"We have got to try and win every game and have a plan for every game just like every week. We have got to try and put things right and focus on getting a result against Sunderland."
