REPORT: Sky Blues 0-1 Portsmouth

Sky Blues fall to defeat at the Ricoh Arena...

2 October 2018

The Sky Blues were unable to gain any points in the Sky Bet League One as they were beaten 1-0 by Portsmouth this evening.

Pompey took the lead through Ronan Curtis, whose solitary 45th minute goal proved the difference between the two sides.

With this result, Mark Robins’ side remain in 14th position.

The first opportunity of the evening fell to Portsmouth’s Ben Close who was found on the edge of the area by Nathan Thompson however his shot was struck wide from inside the area.

Tom Bayliss then created an opening in the middle of the park, his snap-shot following a well worked move was blocked well by Jack Whatmough.

Shortly before the half an hour mark a mix-up between Matthew Clarke and Craig MacGillivray gifted Jonson Clarke-Harris the chance to put the Sky Blues in front. City’s centre forward however couldn’t capitalise and was stopped by the Pompey goalkeeper.

Goal-scoring opportunities were hard to come by in the first-half and it looked set to be a goalless first 45 minutes, but Portsmouth found themselves in front just before the whistle. A Brett Pitman knock-down allowed Ronan Curtis the time and the space to take aim and curl around Lee Burge.

Half Time: Coventry City 0-1 Portsmouth

The 56th minute saw Jodi Jones unleashed for only the second time this season and his introduction gave City an extra element to their attack.

The 20-year-old had a couple of efforts on goal which were blocked by the resolute Pompey defence, but it wasn’t meant to be for the Sky Blues.

With ten minutes to go a chance fell to Pompey’s Jamal Lowe, however he wasn’t able to convert a half volley on target.

The last chance of the game fell to substitute Jordan Thompson from a free-kick wide on the left-hand side.

His stabbed effort was stopped off the line by Pompey’s Clarke and hacked away.
