REPORT: Sky Blues 2-1 Doncaster Rovers

City make it five consecutive wins...

27 October 2018

The Sky Blues continued their magnificent run as they won their fifth successive game in the Sky Bet League One.

Jordy Hiwula opened the scoring in the 20th minute and Luke Thomas doubled the lead just before half-time.

Joe Wright pulled one back for the visitors in the second-half but it wasn’t enough as City held on for all three points.

After just four minutes of play the Sky Blues’ confidence continued from their previous outings as Michael Doyle’s deflected shot from long-range was crucially tipped over by Mark Marosi.

It was then Tom Davies who came ever so close with a header on goal from a Doyle free-kick, Marosi once again however reacted brilliantly.

Doncaster had back-to-back chances to take the lead but neither were taken with Wright miscuing and Tom Anderson heading over from the resulting corner.

With Rovers missing their chance it was time for Hiwula to step up and volley City in front. The ball popped out to the winger on the right-hand side of the penalty area and he exquisitely struck home on his weaker left-foot for his third goal in as many games.

It was a first-half full of set-piece opportunities and Jordan Willis squandered a chance to double the lead from six-yards out with the ball zipping over the crossbar.

Seconds later Jonson Clarke-Harris was sent flying through on goal, but he fired wide after some delightful play in the middle of the park by Tom Bayliss.

Another corner was floated in by Doyle which was headed away by Rovers only to the feet of Thomas who jinked his way onto his left-foot and smashed the ball from the edge of the ‘D’ into the back of the net for his first Sky Blues goal.

HT: 2-0

Wright blasted one back for the visitors after an uneventful start to the second half in the 69th minute from a James Coppinger cross to create a nail-biting final period at the Ricoh Arena.

Rovers then could have made it two but for Lee Burge grasping the ball critically before Paul Taylor could get a toe to it.

A loose pass fell to substitute Jodi Jones but the 22-year-old couldn’t keep his shot down on his weaker right-foot.

Doyle's free-kick's once again caused mayhem as Willis was found at the back post, however his stabbed effort was grabbed desperately by Marosi.

In the precious few seconds remaining Junior Brown came up with a breathtaking goal-line clearance to keep all three of City's points intact.

This win means that the Sky Blues move up to 7th in the Sky Bet League One ahead of their clash next weekend against Accrington Stanley.
