REPORT: Sky Blues 4-1 Colchester United

15 October 2018

The Sky Blues Under-23s got back to winning ways this afternoon with a convincing 4-1 win over Colchester United at the Ricoh Arena.

City went behind to a Callum Jones opener, but two goals from Amadou Bakayoko and one a piece for Jak Hickman and Tony Andreu gave Jason Farndon’s side all three points.

After a quiet opening ten minutes, it was the Sky Blues who had the first opportunity at goal as Tony Andreu turned his man and unleashed an effort from distance, but it went inches wide.

Next up, Josh Eccles ran at the United defence and tried his luck from range, but blazed the effort wide.

The visitors took the lead after Noah Chilvers had a shot from distance and it came back off the post and it was Callum Jones who was quickest to react and slot it past Corey Addai.

However, City responded 90 seconds later and it was Amadou Bakayoko who got the goal in the 18th minute.

Farndon’s side built up from the back and eventually Tony Andreu played a through ball for Bakayoko and he found the bottom corner from a tight angle to make it 1-1.

The Sky Blues almost found another straight after the re-start and it was Andreu again who was instrumental, as his cross was met by Jodi Jones at the back post, but the winger sent his shot over the bar.

Colchester then called Addai into action and the City ‘keeper was equal to it as Kai Hamilton’s shot was pushed away.

33 minutes in and the Sky Blues took the lead through Jak Hickman. The build-up started from Jones who played a ball into the box which was flicked on by Bakayoko for Ogogo and he found Hickman at the back post who smashed the ball past Ethan Ross.

Kai Hamilton was involved again for United, as he ran through the City defence towards goal, but the winger hit his effort straight at Addai.

Up the other end and the last five minutes of the half were dominated by the Sky Blues and it was Bakayoko who saw his shot go over the bar after latching onto a superb ball by Hickman.

A few minutes later and Ross was called into action again as he got down well to prevent Andreu making it 3-1 after he was on the end of a Bakayoko header across goal just before half-time.

However, in the 58th minute, Tony did make it 3-1. The midfielder played one-two with Bakayoko and then slotted it past Ethan Ross from just outside the box.

Farndon’s side continued to apply the pressure, this time it was Jodi who was on the end of a volley from around 25 yards out, but he dragged it wide.

The fourth goal which had been coming, did come in the 69th minute, as Bakayoko was on the end of a goalkeeper save to power the ball into an empty net for 4-1.

The striker continued to be involved and he almost had his hat-trick seven minutes from time, but from a tight angle he couldn’t direct it towards goal.

Colchester’s goalscorer, Callum Jones tried to add a second to his tally for the afternoon, but his shot from inside the box was saved by Corey, in what would be the last bit of action.
