The Sky Blues Under 23s fell to defeat earlier this afternoon, after two goals from Ben Dempsey gave Charlton Athletic all three points.
The midfielder scored a brace in the first half for the Addicks and in the second half, Dexter Walters pulled one back for Jason Farndon’s side.
It was a slow start to proceedings, with neither side troubling the ‘keepers in the first fifteen minutes of the game.
However, it was Jason Euell’s side who took the lead after a ball across the face of the City goal was met by Dempsey and he fired it past Tom Billson.
The ‘keeper was called into action a few minutes later when it was Dempsey again who had a shot from range, but Billson was equal to it.
Up the other end, Dexter Walters tried to grab an equaliser for the Sky Blues after he was on the end of Jak Hickman cross and he took a touch to set himself up and curled a shot towards the top corner but his effort went inches over the bar.
Hickman then had a go himself next up as he stood over a free-kick from 20 yards out and forced the Addicks ‘keeper into a fine save.
But, in the 37th minute, Dempsey grabbed his second of the afternoon after he was on the end of Billy Clarke’s cross and headed in at the back post.
Before the half-time break Billson’s goal was tested, firstly by captain Maloney who fired wide and then Junior who watched as the City ‘keeper denied him.
After the break, there was an immediate response from the Sky Blues and it was Walters who found the back of the net.
The winger was on the end of a superb through ball from Billy Stedman and Dexter rounded the ‘keeper to make it 2-1.
The game quietened as City looked to break down the Charlton defence and try and get that all important equaliser.
The Sky Blues were denied a penalty after 60 minutes as Walters was brought down in the area, but the referee waved it away.
As the game grew, City saw two late headers, one from captain Morgan Williams and another from substitute George Hunt both go wide and City fell to a 2-1 defeat.
