INTERVIEW: Mark Robins Reflects On Southend Result

Sky Blues record their third successive league victory at Roots Hall...

20 October 2018

Mark Robins' Sky Blues left it late to run away from Roots Hall with all three points following a dramatic added-time winner from Jodi Jones.

First league goals of the 2018-19 Sky Bet League One campaign from Jordy Hiwula and Jodi Jones sent the Sky Blues home clutching all three points.

However, despite the nature of the win, Manager Mark Robins thinks that the victory could have been wrapped up before the 91st minute: "It could have been three-nil before they had a say in any of the game.

"I have just seen a picture of it, and it [the goal that was not given] is two yards in the net. So had we not won the game it would have been an absolute travesty.

"I think they are a good team. They make it really difficult for you with the way they play, they are really confident on the ball and move it around well.

"But, we were good. We were really good and we gave good value for the win. Once again we were outstandingly backed, and we are happy to go away with the three points."

City have been taking their chances as they come in recent weeks, and the majority of their openings have been created via set pieces. Today was no different as Jordy Hiwula's opener was the product of Michael Doyle's in-swinging corner kick and the gaffer is pleased that his team are making the most of these openings: "There has been some good deliveries, so it is about time.

"We have been working on them [set pieces] for a long time, so it has taken a while to get any joy from them. But they are starting to believe that they can score from them, and you can see that."

The Sky Blues now have three wins in three in Sky Bet League One, and there is an air of confidence around the team that may have been lacking so far this season, and Robins praises their mentality throughout the afternoon: "You can see it growing gradually in games.

"But equally, you can also see one or two - if it does not go right for them in the game - they still get affected by that.

"Today they have come back and bounced back really well when we have conceded the goal and there are times where we get into some really good opportunities but turn it down due to lack of belief.

"Mostly, we are trying to win the games which is exactly what we want."
