INTERVIEW: Michael Doyle Reflects On Promotion

The Skipper leads the Sky Blues to promotion...

30 May 2018

Sky Blues skipper Michael Doyle, admitted he couldn’t be prouder of his team mates and the City of Coventry following promotion back into League One.

Doyle retuned back to City in the Summer following promotion with Portsmouth the year before, with one aim and that was getting the Sky Blues back into League One and he achieved that yesterday afternoon.

Talking after victory over Exeter City, the midfielder reflected on the game and what it means to him to be back at Coventry City.

He said: “We’re on such a high, it’s unbelievable.

“Play-Off games are full of nerves and since we went to Notts County last week it’s been unbelievable and nobody expected that performance from us apart from ourselves.

“We have real drive and determination for such a young bunch of players and I just felt and knew we cold take control of the game when we want, without being disrespectful I just felt we were able to deal with what they had and the goals speak for themselves.

“That support today we have had all season, MK away, Stoke at home, Notts away and the list goes on and wherever we’ve been we’ve took over and it’s the same at Wembley and I couldn’t be prouder for the team or the city.

“You see the relationship between the players and the fans and when I went to Sheffield United, I didn’t think I would get back to this club, but to get back is brilliant and be part of this I’m going to treasure it.

“My family have lived here and my kids were brought up here and like I say we just want to treasure it.”

Mark Robins side beat Exeter City 3-1 at Wembley with goals coming from Academey graduates Jordan Willis and Jordan Shipley, with Jack Grimmer scoring the third goal.

The young blood running through the City side has been a continuous trend into the side throughout the season and Doyle was full of praise for the youngsters in the team.

“Age is just a number.

“When you have the right balance it just says it all and we have some great pros and some unbelievable young players that can learn from them and for people like myself I’m an older pro and I would say I was fit but I need the younger pros around me for the legs and I have to use them to my advantage.

“The attitude and character from the youngsters is unbelievable and the sky is the limit for them if they keep their feet on the ground.

“This club is going to get back up the divisions and I know when the fans will appreciate it so much and will treasure it.

“They’ve all brought into what we’re about and what we’re trying to do and when they’ve done what they’ve done all year, to reward them with this there’s nothing better.”
