REPORT: Sky Blues U23 2-2 Huddersfield Town U23

19 March 2018

The Sky Blues Under 23s were pegged back in the last minute by Huddersfield Town Under 23s in Professional Development South action.

Two first half goals by Billy Stedman and Jordan Ponticelli looked to set City on their way to three points, but goal from Jordan Williams and Lewis O’Brien meant the points were shared.

It was a slow start to the game, with neither side creating much in the first ten minutes of the game, before City tested Luke Mewitt in the Terriers goal.

Firstly, Josh Barret picked the ball up out wide and cut inside into the area, after some twists and turns he created space and got a shot away at Mewitt, but he pushed it away for a corner.

From the resulting corner, Chris Camwell won his header and knocked it back into the area and Jordan Ponticelli got on the end of it, but his shot was saved again.

A few minutes later and it was Barrett again who was causing the visitors problems, this time he had a shot from distance, but it went wide.

Barrett was involved again just before the 20th minute when a throw in from the left was nodded on by Stuart Beavon to Ponticelli and the striker put the ball into the box and it was met by the Reading loanee, but he fired over.

As the game edged towards half-time, the visitors had their first effort on goal and it was Dominic Tear who found space on the left inside the box and forced Tom Billson into a good stop.

With a minute remaining before half-time, City took the lead and it was through Billy Stedman who was on the end of some good build-up play and he fired the ball into the top corner to make it 1-0.

Then, with a matter of seconds left in the first 45 minutes, Ponticelli doubled the Sky Blues lead with a fine effort from just inside the area, as he fired his shot into the bottom corner.

After the break, it was City who again started the brighter of the two sides and could have been 3-0 up when Kyle Finn was on the end of a Barrett cross, but his volley was saved by Mewitt.

Captain Callum Maycock was involved moments later, as he won the ball back deep into the Huddersfield half and teed up Barrett, who had a shot, but it was saved.

Next up to have a go was Chris Stokes, who played a one two with Beavon on the edge of the box and he forced Mewitt into a good stop.

The visitors pulled one back in the 63rd minute when Jordan Williams was on the end of a rebound following a Billson save, to fire it in to the back of the net.

Jason Farndon’s side almost replied within ten minutes of the goal, but Josh Barrett couldn’t find the target following Kyle Finn’s through ball.

Huddersfield’s Regan Booty came close for the visitors after 80 minutes, when he ran onto a volley from outside of the box, but fired it wide.

However, the Terriers came close to equalising with four minutes left, when a free-kick from 25 yards by Abdelhamid Jabiri was stopped from heading for the top corner by Tom Billson.

Although, they would get their equaliser in the last minute, when Lewis O’Brien slotted the ball past Billson in what proved to be the last piece of action.
