Mark Robins side fall to defeat at the Lamex Stadium...

21 July 2018

The Sky Blues fell to defeat at the Lamex stadium against Stevenage in a pre-season friendly.

Two first-half goals from James Ball and Ben Nugent were enough to give the hosts the win at Broadhall Way this afternoon.

The first effort of the game came for the hosts, when Ben Kennedy stood over a free-kick from around 25 yards, but his set-piece went well over the bar.

Lee Burge was called into action for the first time after 9 minutes of the game, a low shot from Kennedy was comfortably saved by the Sky Blues 'keeper.

Jordon Thompson, who started in a back three alongside Jack Grimmer and Dom Hyam put in a superb block to deny Alex Reid five minutes later, as he dived in at the last minute to stop the shot.

Birthday boy, Jonson Clarke-Harris, had the first shot for Mark Robins side, after he was played through by Tony Andreu, his shot was well saved by Paul Farman.

However, the hosts would take the lead in the 24 minute, when James Ball picked the ball up from outside the box and drilled an effort into the bottom left corner.

The Sky Blues looked to react immediately and it was Zain Westbrooke who tried his luck from range, but his shot went over the bar.

Stevenage doubled their lead two minutes later when Ben Nugent rose highest from a corner to nod past Burge and make it 2-0, in what would be the last bit of action in the first half.

It took until the 53rd minute for the first effort on goal in the second 45 minutes and it was Nugent for the hosts, as he headed over the bar.

Half-time substitute, Jordan Ponticelli almost scored a screamer after 65 minutes. The striker hit the ball on the half-volley and it looked destined for the top corner, but the 'keeper made a superb stop.

Ten minutes later and Reise Allassani won a free-kick just outside the box, which was taken by Westbrooke, but the 'keeper made the save.

The Sky Blues won another free-kick in the 83rd minute when Tom Davies was pushed, and it was Biamou who looked to find the back of the net, but his effort was blocked.

A few minutes later and a ball was whipped into the Sky Blues box and was won by Alex Revell, but he headed wide, in what would be the last piece of action in the game.
