The Sky Blues U23s ran riot away at Bristol City U23s this afternoon, as they came away with all three points in the Professional Development League South.
A Jordan Ponticelli hat-trick and a brace from Stuart Beavon ensured a return to winning form for the Under-23s against Bristol.
The win moves the Sky Blues up into third in the league, two points behind second place Queens Park Rangers and four behind Crystal Palace, with City having a game in hand on both.
It was early pressure from the Sky Blues in the opening 10 minutes of the game, with Callum Maycock looking for an audacious lob after he caught the Bristol ‘keeper off his line, but his effort went wide.
Jordan Ponticelli was troubling the Robins defence early on, as two efforts within the space of five minutes had City ‘keeper Sesay being called into action.
However, it didn’t take long for Jordan to find the back of the net, when he got on the end of a Jack Hickman cross to stab home from close range to make it 1-0.
Hickman himself then almost doubled the Sky Blues lead two minutes later, but he fired wide.
Ponticelli almost had a brace in the 21st minute, but his header was cleared off the line from Harvey Smith, to ensure the score would stay at just 1-0.
City continued to rain pressure on the Bristol defence and they were rewarded with a second goal on the 33rd minute, as Stuart Beavon picked up the ball on the edge of the box and slotted is past the ‘keeper.
Shots from Beavon, Ponticelli and Haynes couldn’t force a third before half-time and the Sky Blues went into the break 2-0 up.
It took just nine minutes in the second 45 minutes for Coventry to get their third and Ponticelli’s second of the game after Beavon squared back to Jordan and he placed it past Sesay.
Then, just two minutes later, the striker completed his hat-trick and Coventry’s fourth of the afternoon, following some fine work, Ponticelli finished off the move.
Corey Addai was called into action moments later, but he got down well to deny Jake Andrews from finding the back of the net.
The Robins tried to get back into the game, but for all their work, they conceded another and it was a second of the afternoon for Stuart Beavon, as the striker put away a neat finish to make it 5-0.
Bristol managed to get a consolation goal late on when Semenyo headed home in the 87th minute past Addai.
