PREVIEW: Coventry City v Stoke City - The Sky Blues welcome the Potters to the Ricoh Arena for the first time since 2008

City face Stoke in the third round of the FA Cup...

5 January 2018

Venue: The Ricoh Arena

Competition: Emirates FA Cup

Date: Saturday, January 6th 2018.

Kick-Off: 3pm

The Sky Blues welcome Stoke City to the Ricoh Arena in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Potters boss, Mark Hughes finds himself under immense pressure from fans after his side fell into the Premier League relegation zone following last week's defeat to Newcastle, making success in the cup more important than ever.

Hughes will be without Bruno Martins-Indi who is close to fighting back from a groin strain and Stephen Ireland who suffered a leg fracture in May.

Defender Rod McDonald could join Coventry's already long injury list with the Sky Blues currently without Peter Vincenti (PCL), Jodi Jones (ACL) Tony Andreu (ACL) and Liam Kelly (heel).

New loan-signing Jordan Maguire-Drew could make his first start with the wide-man eligible to play however Josh Barrett, who joined City from Reading on deadline day misses out through illness.

Opponents

The Premier League opponents at the Ricoh Arena include Welsh international midfielder, Joe Allen. The former Swansea man has made over 183 Premier League appearances alongside 40 international caps.

Xherdan Shaqiri's CV boasts stints at Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. The unpredictable winger joined Stoke for £12m in 2015 and instantly became one of the Potters star players.

Goalkeeper, Jack Butland is likely to feature for the visitors. The former Birmingham City, Leeds United and Derby County loanee looks the favourite to be England's number one for Russia 2018.

Memorable Meeting

The Sky Blues beat Stoke City 1-0 in 1987 on the way to FA Cup glory thanks to a goal from Micky Gynn.

City had already knocked out Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United in the earlier rounds when Gynn secured their place in the quarter-finals.

Coventry would go on the beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 in the next round before a 3-2 win against Leeds United at Hillsborough would set the date for the biggest day in Sky Blues history.
