Famous Game: 1962 League Cup Final

Rochdale reached the 1962 League Cup Final after defeating top division side Blackburn Rovers in the semi-final.

This set up a two-legged final appearance against second division Norwich City. Unfortunately, Rochdale lost 4-0 over the two legs.

However, the cup run and final would live long in the memory, as they became the first side from the Fourth Division to reach the final of a major competition.

Club Legend:

Keith Hill

Current manager Keith Hill is arguably the clubs most successful manager to date. Though he played for The Dale between 1996 and 2001, making over 150 league appearances, it has been in management where he has earned legend status.

Initially appointed caretaker manager in 2006, Hill soon got the job permanently, reaching the League Two play-offs in consecutive seasons between 2008 and 2009.

In the 2009-10 Hill's Rochdale side ended a 41-year wait for promotion with a win over Northampton Town as Rochdale secured the third automatic promotion spot. The following season The Dale finished 9th in League one, equaling the clubs highest league finish since 1969-70.

After leaving to join then Championship club Barnsley in 2011, Hill returned to the club in January 2013, where his side gained promotion to league two in 2014. His side would finish in 8th place in league one during the 2014-15 season to better the clubs highest league finish.

Opposition

Following securing their position in League One on the final day of the 2017/18 season, Keith Hill's side would've been hoping for a season away from the wrong end of the table.

However, after an opening day win of the season at recently relegated Burton Albion, results haven't gone the way the Dale would have liked.

Without a win in their next four league matches, Rochdale are back in familiar territory, currently just one point above the bottom four.

Last Time We Met

The last time the Sky Blues faced Rochdale, came when they were in League One just over 16 months ago.

Rochdale hosted the Sky Blues and they ran out 2-0 winners courtesy of a brace from Ian Henderson.

Both assists that day were provided by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who now turns out for Premier League side Cardiff City.

Did You Know?

Until 1949 Rochdale wore black and white stripes. This was influenced by the strong Newcastle Side of 1907, the year Rochdale were formed.

These colours were adopted in the 2007-2008 season, as The Dale commemorated their centenary year.
